Captain’s Log — Deadlines and Commitments

Rachel Dahl

One of my favorite movies is called The Commitments — a 1991 film about a young music fan who puts together a rag-tag band of working-class kids to form a soul band in Dublin, Ireland. It’s an unlikely success. They’re all white street kids who happen upon the accident of raw talent and good promoting as they learn to sing their emotions through this decidedly black genre. As they begin to get famous, they are faced with all the trapping that come with the success of things falling into place.

As we come down to the wire and it’s getting close to time to send the paper to the printer and roll out week two of The Pershing Post, we’re hoping we have to figure out how to deal with an overwhelming success.

So far, the reception has been so positive — thank you! We’ve gotten some really good feedback and are looking for more. We would love to have you send in story ideas and please let us know if you are interested in writing or covering a meeting or three. And if you see something we’re missing give a gentle “heads up!”

We sure appreciate all of you who jumped in to write stories about the local happenings. Our philosophy of local, community news is to make sure we are covering all the good things that are going on in our communities. We want to get as many people in the paper as we can each week. We want to tell all the good, happy stories. There are plenty of heavy, serious things that happen, and we’ll cover those two, but we think it’s important that the local paper tells the local stories.

Thanks to Phillip who answered all my lame questions about your water — in Fallon we deal with Lahontan Reservoir and Truckee-Carson Irrigation District in the Newlands Project. We are water nerds here and I assumed you are too, with your Rye Patch Reservoir. If I were to go for a week and not put the water levels in the paper, there would be hell-to-pay. In the Western water world, as you know, you don't want to mess up the language, but I wasn’t sure how you talk about your storage and if you track flows in the river. We just put the storage and the elevation, so if you want more than that, let me know.

At any rate, we’re going to press. One more front-page spot to fill and send to proof and then to print, where they are down a press and waiting for parts. If it’s not one thing around here, it’s your mother.

So, while we put on the finishing touches and get this thing shipped to Vegas to print, we’ll still be right here…

…Keeping you Posted.
