Carl Fredric Clinger, born in Lovelock, Nevada, on December 27, 1942, passed away on December 8, 2023, at his birthplace. He was the son of Edna Morae Shute Clinger Holliday and Earnest Orrin Clinger. Carl leaves behind his loving Life Partner, Gloria Montero, his older brother Cecil Clarence Clinger, and half-sister Florence Beard. Carl’s three children are: Karl Marke (Rebecca), Kristine Morae (Michael), and Kimberly Michelle Clinger. He was also a devoted grandfather to Ralph Rodrigues IV, Tor Clinger, Petra Clinger Shultz (John), and Zach Clinger, as well as proud great-grandfather to Lila Mae. Additionally, Carl was blessed with a bonus great-granddaughter, Bonnie Faye, along with a cherished family of cows, llamas, chickens, rabbits, dogs, cats, and goats.
Carl’s career began in the Bay Area in 1969, where he spent about 30 years working with ESL/TRW in the field of engineering, which he was able to travel the world. In his mid-50s, Carl made the life-changing decision to retire and return to Lovelock to care for his father and manage the family-owned ranch. In keeping with the family’s legacy, he went on to purchase multiple properties in the Lovelock area and maintained the family’s commitment to the Conservation District. Carl’s deep devotion to civic service was evident throughout his life. He was an active member of the Humboldt Basin Water Authority, and in November 2024, he was honored posthumously with the Hall of Fame Award from the Nevada Association of Conservation Districts for his years of dedicated work. He was also the past President of Nevada Goat Producers providing as much education as possible to the goat producers. His leadership was also instrumental in the recently released Pershing County Development Codes.
Additionally, Carl played a vital role in the FFA, 4-H and Grange organizations helping to establish chapters in several Nevada cities, working and supporting the young farmers and furthering the organization’s impact on today’s youth. In addition to the numerous youth activities, Carl also was involved with Quilts of Valor and Wreaths across America supporting our dedicated veterans.
Carl’s commitment to his community extended beyond conservation. In the 1970s and 80s, he was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts, mentoring many young scouts to the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and beyond while raising his family and working. His passion for the outdoors also led him to volunteer at Henry Coe State Park in the 1980s and 90s as hiking was his deep passion, often hiking for several weeks by himself and carrying all he needed for the long adventure. During his hikes he would take pictures of the landscape, flowers, and the occasional animal who was keeping an eye on him. He taught his children and great granddaughters to love Lapidary (rock cutting and polishing) for rocks he collected during his hikes.
Carl will always be remembered for his direct personality, inquisitive mind, humor, and unwavering dedication to his family, community, and the land he loved.
